I was very ill, home from my sophomore year in school. Woke up in the middle of the night, maybe 3:30 in the morning, because there was a raging thunder and lightning storm. I was listening to WNEW FM, and a piece of music came on that I never heard before. It was Hocus Pocus, and I immediately fell in love with it. But what with how sick I felt, how late at night it was, and the raging storm outside, I went absolutely bonkers listening to it. I’m gonna say that was either very late 72 or early 73, and since then it has been written in stone that FOCUS is my second favorite band of all time. I saw them in November 73 at the State Theater in New Brunswick, New Jersey, but I saw them a year later, November 74, in the gymnasium at Middlesex County College, in Edison/Fords, New Jersey. We were the first ones there, and for the entire show I stood directly in front of Jan Akkerman, and it was unquestionably the greatest show I’ve ever seen. I’ve seen so many great bands, including Cream, Traffic, and dozens of others, but that second Focus show was unquestionably the greatest concert I’ve ever been. Coming up on 50 years!
